Lonza Capsugel will launch Organicaps, the only USDA-certified, plant-based, immediate-release pullulan capsule made in North America, at SupplySide Global.

The capsules feature a high oxygen barrier, non-reactive shell, and strong polymer stability, and help brands stay one step ahead with organic product claims.

Consumers increasingly cite that they are influenced by the presence of organic ingredients and are willing to pay more for them, Lonza reports, and nutraceuticals are no exception; organic certified supplements are outpacing their non-organic counterparts, the company reported, citing data from Nutrition Business Journal and SPINS.

Organicaps help manufacturers achieve organic product certifications without compromising on performance, Lonza noted. The capsules are made from pullulan, which offers the highest oxygen barrier of any vegan capsule material, Lonza reports, helping to preserve the stability of oxygen-sensitive ingredients. They offer an immediate release profile comparable to gelatin, and perform well with fillings.

Organicaps’ shells also lack the “spotting” that occurs with gelatin capsules, and the crystal-clear transparency and high luster enhance the visual appeal of organic ingredients, Lonza reported. The official USDA organic seal offers appeal and differentiation, with 65% of shoppers more likely to purchase a product if it has this seal, the company reported, citing data from Nutrition Business Journal and SPINS. Excluding inorganic processing aids, the capsules are 100% plant-based and Non-GMO Project Verified.
